It was Pikes Peak, "America's Mountain", that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful" after a visit. From the summit, one can indeed see spacious skies and off in the vast distance, amber waves of grain.
Pikes Peak is named for Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike who tried unsuccessfully to conquer it in 1806 and declared that no man would ever reach the top. Pikes Peak towers over the city from it's 14,110 foot height, it can be admired from anywhere in the Springs Area.
